Late Tax Return: How to Do Your Overdue Tax Returns Do you have a previous year tax return that is overdue? Or maybe you have a few late tax returns you’ve been avoiding? This is not a good look for a law enforcement officer. Don’t worry: You’ve come to the right place. Our Police tax team contacts you with any questions or ideas for improving your tax refund. We have completed up to 25 years late in the past for clients not a bad effort. Your overdue tax return is never “too late” (and the ATO never forgets) Police Officers If you have a late tax return, the sooner you do it, the better! The ATO is very clear about this: You must lodge a tax return for every year that you received any income. If you missed one year’s tax return, the ATO will never forget about it. The ATO often applies costly late fines and interest charges that grow and grow over time. Un-lodged late tax returns = the ATO takes even more of your money.
If you have a late tax return, lodge it as soon as possible. (The longer you wait, the more chance of ATO fines and interest charges.) If you lodge your late tax return now and you don’t owe the ATO any money, usually they won’t charge any late penalties*. It doesn’t matter if you have one late return or 15 overdue tax returns – the sooner you lodge your returns, the better. If your income is below the tax-free threshold or you had no income, you are still required to notify the ATO. Instead of lodging a late tax return, you’ll need to submit an ATO “Non-Lodgment Advice”. This lets the ATO know that you were not required to lodge a tax return that year. If you think this applies to you, please start and sign a return for the years you have outstanding. Then send us a message using “my messages” in the top menu. We’ll check your records with the ATO and confirm whether you need to lodge a late tax return or a Non-Lodgment Advice and we’ll help you get it done in no time. Police Officers
