Quick Answers

Short answers to the questions we get about these resources. The guides above go into detail.

Are these police tax resources free?

Yes. Every video, guide, checklist and answer linked from this page is free to read, watch or download, with no obligation to book anything.

What can police officers claim on tax?

Common police deductions include union and association fees, compulsory uniform and its laundering, protective equipment, work-related phone and internet use, self-education tied to your current role, and work travel that is not ordinary home-to-work commuting. The Police Tax Deductions guide on this page covers each one and the records the ATO expects.

Do I still need an accountant if myGov pre-fills my return?

The pre-filled myGov return shows income the ATO already knows about. It does not know your police deductions, so anything you do not add yourself is simply left out. That is the single most common reason officers under-claim.

How current are these guides?

Guides are reviewed each financial year and rates, thresholds and checklists are updated for the current year. Anything year-specific is labelled with the year it applies to.

Can I get advice about my own situation from these pages?

These resources are general information and do not take your personal circumstances into account. For advice on your own return, book an appointment with Garry or use the Express Tax Upload and we will review your details directly.
